The completion rate for Sharjah’s Al Taawun Square development project has reached between 15 per cent and 20 per cent. The integrated strategic project is aimed at enhancing traffic flow and improving connectivity between the main axes within the emirate and with neighbouring emirates with a view to raising the efficiency of the road network and reducing travel time. This was announced through the Direct Line programme, which explained that the project would provide direct benefits to road users by reducing waiting time and travel time, enhancing quality of life and easing movement between Sharjah and Dubai in both directions. The initial opening of the project is scheduled for 2026, as it will contribute to linking Al Taawun and Al Khan areas as well as the lakes and lagoons to the local road network implemented by the Government of Sharjah and the federal roads, thus enhancing connectivity with Dubai, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain.Smooth traffic flowThe project represents one of the most prominent infrastructure projects implemented by the Government of Sharjah as part of its plans to develop the road network and raise its operational efficiency in line with the urban and population growth witnessed by the emirate. The project will further enhances the smooth traffic flow on the vital axes that receive high traffic volumes throughout the day, especially during peak hours. The project includes the implementation of integrated engineering solutions aimed at improving vehicle movement, providing more efficient and safer routes, increasing the road’s capacity and supporting mobility between residential and commercial areas and linking them to the main road network inside and outside the emirate.Joint co-operationThe project is being carried out through joint co-operation among several government entities, most notably Sharjah Initiatives Implementation Authority (Mubadara), Department of Public Works and Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority, among other entities. This is part of a comprehensive development plan for Al Taawun Square axis leading to Al Nahda Bridge and from there to Dubai as well as the development of Al Khan Street axis up to Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road.5 partsThe project consists of five main parts including the development of Al Taawun Square tunnel, development of Al Khulafa Al Rashideen intersection and development of the intersections perpendicular to the first and second industrial streets and the intersection perpendicular to the extension of the third industrial street. These developments will achieve smoother roads, increase the capacity of the road network in the area and enhance the integration of the transport network between Sharjah and the neighboring emirates in line with the Emirate’s future development plans.
